What is an Immigration Medical Exam?

An Immigration Medical Exam (IME) is a health assessment required by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for most visa categories — including permanent residence, work permits, study permits and refugee applications. Only IRCC-designated panel physicians can perform these exams, and results are submitted electronically using eMedical for secure, fast processing.

Common questions from Toronto patients

How long does it take to receive my medical exam results?

Our clinic is committed to a quick turnaround, typically submitting exam results within 5 to 10 days of the examination. Standard blood analyses are completed promptly, and we use a paperless e-medical method for fast, secure transmission to IRCC.

After your exam you'll receive documentation containing your case number (IME/UMI) as proof of completion.

Is the immigration medical exam covered by insurance in Canada?

Immigration medical exams are generally not covered by provincial health insurance plans such as OHIP. They are considered a requirement for immigration purposes rather than standard medical care, so they are typically paid out-of-pocket. If you have private insurance, you may wish to check with your provider, though coverage is uncommon.

Do I need to fast for the immigration medical exam?

In general, fasting is not required. However, certain blood tests could require fasting, so it's always best to confirm with the clinic or panel physician beforehand for specific instructions.
